If you’ve ever tried booking a massage therapy appointment and found yourself overwhelmed by the options, you’re not alone. There are many types of massage therapy, including deep tissue, relaxation, cupping, RAPID, lymphatic, hot stones, sports massage, and therapeutic massage.
For most people, the challenge isn’t understanding what massage therapy is. It’s understanding what their body actually needs.
At Recovery Lab in Red Deer, we’ve built our massage therapy services differently. Instead of organizing treatments strictly by modalities or techniques, we guide clients through four treatment pathways: reLAX, reCOVER, reSTORE, and reSET.
We structure our clinic this way since most clients don’t walk into a clinic knowing whether they need trigger point therapy or myofascial work. They simply know how they feel. Tight. Burnt out. Sore. Stiff. Injured. Run down. Overwhelmed. Restricted. Struggling to recover.
Our categories are designed to help clients better understand the intention behind the treatment and the type of care their body may benefit from most in that moment. Every session is customized to each individual.
Massage therapy is a hands-on treatment that works with your muscles, fascia, nervous system, and connective tissue, and, when integrated into your life, may help ease pain, reduce tension, and support your recovery.
Massage Therapy: The Basics
All of our massage therapists are registered and experienced at what they do. Using their hands, forearms, and specific techniques, they can work through layers of muscle and soft tissue to help reduce an ache or release tension.
At Recovery Lab, massage therapy is more than relaxation alone. It’s part of a larger recovery-focused approach that works alongside physiotherapy, manual osteopathy, sport recovery, movement-based treatment, and rehabilitation-focused care.
Depending on the treatment style and your goals, massage therapy may help:
- reduce muscular tension and stiffness
- improve mobility and movement quality
- support stress management and nervous system regulation
- improve circulation and recovery
- reduce physical strain from work, training, or repetitive movement
- support injury recovery and overall body maintenance
The most effective treatment is not always the deepest pressure or the trendiest. It’s the treatment approach that best matches what your body needs at that point in time.
Understanding Recovery Lab’s Massage Therapy Categories
We’ve organized our massage therapy offerings into four treatment categories: reLAX, reCOVER, reSTORE, and reSET. Each category corresponds to a different goal, a different tissue and nervous system response, and a different way our therapists approach the session.
reLAX
reLAX is centered around nervous system regulation, stress reduction, and helping the body slow down and recover from the demands of everyday life.
These sessions are designed for clients looking to decompress, reduce tension, improve sleep quality, and create space for both physical and mental recovery. While calming and restorative in nature, reLAX treatments are still intentional therapeutic sessions focused on helping the body shift out of constant stress mode and into a more balanced recovery state.
Treatments within this category may include:
- Recovery Massage
- Relaxation Massage
- Hot Stone Massage
- Jade Stone Massage
- Prenatal Massage
- Pediatric Massage
reLAX is ideal for stress-related tension, mental burnout, nervous system overload, poor sleep, general muscle tightness, and clients looking for restorative care and full body recovery.
reCOVER
reCOVER is our deeper therapeutic category and is focused on relieving chronic tension, improving mobility, and helping the body recover from the physical demands of work, posture, training, and repetitive strain.
These sessions are results-driven and often involve more focused therapeutic work targeting deeper layers of muscle, fascia, and connective tissue with intention and precision. Depending on your therapist and treatment goals, sessions may incorporate multiple techniques within the same appointment.
Treatments within this category may include:
- Deep Tissue Massage
- Trigger Point Therapy
- Myofascial Cupping
- Graston Technique
- TMJ Dysfunction Massage
- Therapeutic Massage
reCOVER is well-suited for chronic neck and shoulder tension, low back tightness, headaches, mobility restrictions, repetitive strain injuries, muscular discomfort, and ongoing tightness that continues returning despite stretching or general massage alone.
reSTORE
reSTORE focuses on restorative and supportive care for clients needing a gentler approach to recovery, regulation, and overall well-being. These treatments work with the body more globally and are often focused on calming the nervous system, supporting circulation and lymphatic flow, reducing overwhelm, and helping clients reconnect with how their body feels.
Treatments within this category may include:
- Craniosacral Therapy
- Lymphatic Massage
- Reflexology Massage
- Oncology Massage
- Reiki Therapy
- Reiki and Massage Therapy
- Renewal Massage
reSTORE is often beneficial for stress-related fatigue, swelling, and fluid retention, post-surgical recovery, chronic stress patterns, nervous system overwhelm, burnout, and clients looking for gentler, supportive care rather than deeper muscular treatment.
reSET
reSET is our most movement and performance-focused category. These sessions are designed for clients dealing with injuries, movement dysfunction, chronic pain patterns, athletic demands, or physical restrictions that are impacting how they move and function day to day.
Rather than simply chasing symptoms, reSET treatments focus on improving movement quality, reducing compensation patterns, restoring function, and helping the body move more efficiently under physical demand.
Treatments within this category may include:
- RAPID NeuroFascial Reset
- Active Release Therapy
- Athlete ReSet Massage
- Performance Rehab Massage
reSET is especially beneficial for athletes, active individuals, physically demanding occupations, injury recovery, and persistent movement-related issues such as sciatica, plantar fasciitis, frozen shoulder, TMJ dysfunction, and chronic movement restrictions.
What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first appointment at Recovery Lab starts with a conversation. Your therapist will spend time at the start of the session understanding what brought you in, stress levels, previous injuries, how your body is currently functioning, and what you’re hoping to get from treatment.
This intake process helps guide the treatment plan because the same symptom can come from very different causes. Tight shoulders from stress often need a very different treatment approach than tight shoulders from strength training, repetitive work demands, or movement compensation patterns.
From there, your therapist will adjust pressure, pacing, and technique throughout the session based on how your tissue is responding and what you’re feeling. Communication is part of the treatment so if something feels like too much, or not enough, or if you want to spend more time on a specific area, please tell us. The session is yours, and our therapists are trained to adapt in real time.
After deeper therapeutic treatments, mild soreness can sometimes occur for 24 to 48 hours as the body responds and adapts to the work performed during the session. Staying hydrated, moving gently, and allowing your body time to recover can help maximize the benefits of treatment.
